Poco and Darby spent their whole lives in The East Mire Cartel. Half-Elf sisters captured presumably in a pirate raid. It’s not often talked about how their blood parents were most likely killed by those they now call family. The pair spent their earliest years being brought up by the whores of a brothel used by The Cartel as a front. Here they learned the ins and outs of being a cutpurse from the time they could walk. They were also employed as lookouts and couriers for The Cartel. After a decade of street urchin life, the girls were finally brought forth to the man that had captured them, Hugh Storye. One of The Cartels most feared ship captains and assassins. Hugh Storye then took the pair as hands aboard his ship, The Sea Bastard. Though touted as a ruthless killer and villain, Hugh treated the two girls as if they were his own daughters. He taught them everything he knew and the girls quickly grew into fearsome rogues. Hugh being an officer in The Cartel, unfortunately, meant most of their time was spent in port at Aldingstone but The Sea Bastard still spent a great deal of time on the open seas hunting down merchant ships and fighting off other foreign pirates.
One day Hugh came to the girls with an important mission. The job was extremely dangerous and very high profile. They were to assassinate Her Most Holy Light, Sulin. Head of the church of Pelor, leader of The Keepers of The Light, and head of the ruling council of Aldingstone. The job came right from Kaziz, the leader of the East Mire Cartel, himself. And was commissioned by Marius Ghast, a corrupt member of the ruling council. It wouldn’t be easy but Hugh assured them that with planning and stealth they should come back well before anyone even found her body. The rewards would be immense.
The plan was simple – an insider left a gate open for them to enter the compound unnoticed in the dead of night. Grappling hooks took them to the top of the tower. Deft hands and silent feet got them through the balcony door. Opening the throat of a sleeping old woman was simple. Then it was back into the night to meet at the rendezvous. From there the pair would take horses and lay low in the countryside until the dust settled.
They were to meet a Cartel contact in a barn just outside of the city to get horses for the ride ahead. Upon entering they discovered that the barn was empty and their contact appeared to have not arrived yet. This made the girls suspicious but they figured it was best to stick to the plan and trust in The Cartel. Then something struck them as even more odd… This barn had been reinforced all along the exterior. Metal grates covered the windows, the doors and parts of the walls were bolstered with iron. Just as this started to sink in they heard the very recognizable sounds of a heavy chain being put into place and locked outside of the door they had entered. They were trapped! Then the whole structure was set ablaze. They had been double crossed!
The girls clawed and tore at anything and everything they could to escape but to no avail. Clawing until their hands bled. In the end they lay together in the center of the inferno barely conscious, being asphyxiated by the thick clouds of smoke. But through it all both girls could not help but catch an intense smell of honey just before going black.
